The Better Homes Ottawa Loan Program (BHOLP) is a city-backed initiative that helps Ottawa homeowners finance energy-efficient home upgrades. The program offers low-interest, 20-year loans of up to $125,000 (or 10% of your home’s current assessed value, whichever is less) to cover the cost of energy-saving improvements. Eligible measures include thermal envelope upgrades, high-efficiency windows and doors, mechanical systems, renewable energy installations, electric vehicle chargers (Level 2), and even the addition of rental suites (up to 30% of the loan value).
These loans are tied to the property, not the homeowner, making it easier to repay through your property tax bill while enjoying immediate benefits from your home energy improvements. The minimum loan amount issued is $10,000, allowing homeowners of all budgets to participate. By taking part in BHOLP, residents can access energy rebates, government incentives, and financial assistance while improving home comfort, energy efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
